Pappelina is a Swedish brand best known for their incredible Plastic Rugs. The name Pappelina is a combination of the words “paper”, “linen” and “Linaˮ. If they make plastic rugs then why these words? Well it all Began in 1999 when Lina Rickardsson started weaving. At first she made linen rugs and paper placemats then she was inspired to create experimental rugs of plastic. By using a new tying technique and twice as much material as normal, she created a rug that would be the first of its kind.
All Pappelina Rugs are woven in a Family run mill in Dalarna in the heartland of Sweden. The mill has been weaving linen since the fifties and use their expertise to combine phthalate-free PVC ribbon and polyester warp into a uniquely woven rug. Each rug ends with a welded ribbon, ensuring that it wont fray. The rug is finished when it gets embossed with the Pappelina logo.
The materials and process results in a very durable rug that requires minimal care. The plastic is naturally UV protected which makes them fantastic for outdoor use. All of the colours are from the plastic itself, meaning there’s no coatings to fade or rub off over time.
Pappelina’s rugs are manufactured in Sweden from Swedish plastic foil. The plastic foil PVC ribbon is made in southern Sweden by the company Gislaved Folie AB. New raw plastic is used to manufacture the foil, which ensures that no environmentally hazardous heavy metals or harmful softeners make their way into our rugs.
